Forma

sonotechture

cyclo. is a collaborative research project by Ryoji Ikeda and Carsten Nicolai which focuses on the visualisation of sound, and seeks to create a new hybrid of visual art and music.

Since their collaboration began in 1999, cyclo.'s work–live performances, CDs, books, and on going research – has focused on their shared interest in the visualisation of sound. Ikeda and Nicolai have developed a database of sounds composed to produce visual responses when analysed in real time with the help of stereo image monitoring equipment. Phase and amplitude of steroids signals can be illustrated graphically: the audio elements constructed through the minute editing of frequencies (often beyond the range of human hearing) and selected by the artists for their visual characteristics when analysed. Through processes of composition, editing and experimentation, cyclo. is amassing an ‘infinity index’ of sound fragments.

In building this archive, Ikea and Nicolai transcend the usual dynamic of image acting as a functional accompaniment to sound. Instead, the audio element of the process is subservient to the desire and appetite of the image.

Ryoji Ikeda is a Japanese sound and visual artist living and working in Paris, France and Kyoto, Japan. Ikeda has gained an international reputation as one of the few artists working convincingly across both visual and sonic media. He elaborately orchestras sound, visuals, materials, physical phenomena and mathematical notions into immersive live performances and installations. Alongside musical activity, Ikeda has been working on long-term projects through live performances, installations, books and CD’s such as datamatics (2006-), test pattern (2008-), spectra (2001-), cyclo (a collaborative project with Carsten Nicolai), superposition (2012-), supersymmetry (2014-) and micro | macro (2015-). Ryoji Ikeda is represented by Almine Rech Gallery.

Carsten Nicolai is a Berlin-based artist whose work comprises images, installations and music. Exhibited and performed in major galleries and festivals world-wide, Nicolai's works captivate consistently through elegance, simplicity and cool technicism. As Alva Noto, his compositions combine pared-down electronic sounds with the rhythmic groove of hip hop and R&B.
