Echo

Echo is a large-scale video art installation by Mark Boulos. Viewers encounter a video image of themselves in real time – emitting more than just a reflection, viewers find themselves lost in a city, surrounded by buildings and traffic that seem to break the rules of perspective. Movements appear delayed, and voices become an unsteady echo, creating feelings of disembodiment and alienation - the ghost of the ego; the mirror cracked.

Made in collaboration with neuroscientist Professor Olaf Blanke, Echo uses a technological version of the 19th century stage trick ‘Pepper’s Ghost’ coupled with 3D video techniques that manipulate the mind’s perception of the body’s location.
