Quarantine
Gina Czarnecki
2011
Quarantine is a film installation work by Gina Czarnecki that focuses on the beauty and the physicality of pure movement.
Intended to create a very physical sensation for the viewer, Quarantine presents a seemingly simple single take film as a complex and confronting journey from the physical into the psychological. The performer contorts and twists both her body and psyche into extremes, challenging our perceptions of pain, pleasure, endurance and torture.

—Quarantine was created by Gina Czarnecki in 2011. Sound by Chris Watson. Performed by Iona Kewney. Co-produced by Forma.
The score, created by Chris Watson, is sourced from a stereophonic stethoscope used to record sound from inside the performer's body. Mixed with guttural sounds, physical exertion and body impact, the sound of breaths, heartbeats and tendons provide a rich tapestry to draw us deeper into motion, rhythm, time and space.
Gina Czarnecki realises her art in a diverse and often unconventional range of media, including installations, sculpture, video, and site specific works. Since the mid-1990’s her work has found fascination with convergent developments in life sciences and technologies, their possible applications and how this shapes and informs identity.
