Rudiments
Broomberg & Chanarin
2015
Rudiments is a film made by Broomberg & Chanarin in collaboration with a group of young army cadets at a military camp on the outskirts of Liverpool, United Kingdom that explores the formative moments of childhood.
The usually uniform and unthinking obedience of the soldiers-in-training is interrupted by the performance of a clown, radically challenging their military codes and carefully choreographed routines. Displayed as part of a set of photographic and performative works that collectively explore tensions between discipline and change, precision and chaos, empathy and schadenfreude (pleasure derived from another person's misfortune).
