Skill

Skill is a 12 part film focused by artist Dryden Goodwin, based on his encounters with 12 local people from east Durham.

Each person has a hands-on specialist skill; ranging from tattooing, to wood-turning, to horse training and Goodwin's film encapsulates the drawings he made observing each person at their work, recording the conversations as part of an atmospheric soundtrack. Skill reveals surprising connections and kinships between the participants and their endeavours, and the film is a celebration of dexterity, passion and commitment, capturing a shared deftness of hand and mind.

PreviousNext

In October and November 2014, Skill was projected outdoors and screened at community venues across east Durham. The 12 part film is also available to watch at drydengoodwin-skill.org along with the drawings made in the making of the project. As part of East Durham Creates, a programme of talks, workshops and other events took place to contextualise the work.

Dryden Goodwin's practice incorporates drawing, often in combination with photography and live action video; he creates gallery installations, films, projects in public space, etchings, works on-line and soundtracks. Goodwin's work has been shown extensively nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, The Photographers' Gallery, London, The National Portrait Gallery, London, the Venice Biennale and the Hasselblad Foundation in Gothenberg, Sweden.
