Reverse Karaoke

Reverse Karaoke is a collaborative installation by Kim Gordon and Jutta Koether. It consists of a painted Yurt style tent housing a lo-fi rehearsal set-up with guitar, microphone, bass, and drums and a basic PA system. The visitor is invited to play the instruments and record their own music along a pre-recorded vocal track of Kim Gordon's voice. The track is recorded live by a sound engineer who burns two CD copies of the track, while the visitor(s) decorate two CD sleeves using materials in the gallery. One copy of the CD becomes part of the piece itself on display in a record box, and the other the visitor takes home.

The work was complemented by a series of evening performances in which artists were invited to use the piece's set. Evening events featured Jenny Hoyston (Erase Errata), Heather Leigh Murray, Christina Carter, Ana Da Silva (The Raincoats), Partyline and Spider and the Webs.

Kim Gordon is a founding member of acclaimed rock group Sonic Youth as well as being part of numerous side projects such as Free Kitten and Mirror/Dash. Beside her music making she has an ongoing career in the art world. Her installations have been exhibited across the US, Japan and Europe including solo exhibitions in New York's Reena Spaulings and Participant Inc Gallery, as well as showing work at the Gothenburg Biennale, Gothenburg Kunsthalle and creating Club In The Shadow in collaboration with Jutta Koether at Kenny Schachter ConTEMPorary NYC. Gordon continues to be involved in ongoing creative relationships with visual artists such as Dan Graham, Raymond Pettibon, Mike Kelley and Richard Prince.

Jutta Koether is a German born painter, performance artist, musician, writer and theoretician based in New York. She has had solo exhibitions across Europe and the US including Thomas Erben Gallery, New York, Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, and Akademie Der Bildenden Künste in Vienna as well as partaking in numerous group shows internationally.
