Security and Electrical Walks

Berlin based artist Christina Kubisch has been developing 'electrical walks' which make audible the otherwise undetectable sound waves generated by electromagnetic signals that surround us.

Kubisch showed two works from this series in the Her Noise exhibition. The first, Security, was installed at the South London Gallery where visitors were invited to navigate Kubisch's maze of electrical cables containing acoustic translations of city walks gathered from security systems in London, Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Taipei and Tokyo.

Across town, Kubisch devised an Electrical Walk around Kensington in collaboration with the Goethe Institut. Visitors could pick up the headphones at the Goethe Institut to discover the hidden soundscape of Kensington according to Kubisch's specially developed map. Kubisch maintains that the technology of the future is invisible, inaudible, wireless, and it is these hidden worlds that she seeks to make audible.

Christina Kubisch is a German composer and artist working with performances, video, sound installations, sound sculptures and ultraviolet light. She has had numerous solo exhibitions internationally and participated in a large number of events and group exhibitions such as Sonic Boom, The Hayward Gallery, London, Visual Sound, Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, Singuhr-Hšrgalerie, Berlin, and Sounding Spaces, ICC Tokyo. Her music has been released with various labels such as Cramps Records, Edition RZ, Ampersand, Semishigure, Die Schachtel and Olof Bright.
